Living with IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition of the digestive system, causing bouts of stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. IBS can be described as a disruption of the 'rhythm' of digestion - the bowel is healthy but for reasons which are not necessarily clear, it doesn't operate as well as it should.
IBS affects people differently, with some people experiencing more severe symptoms than others. Bouts of IBS can last from a few days to a few months, and many people will experience periods of IBS throughout their lives, although symptoms can improve.
Although the causes of IBS are unknown, people experiencing IBS may be able to identify triggers, such as particular foods or emotional stimulation, such as stress.
IBS is unpredictable and unsettling. It can be painful and debilitating, and coping with the symptoms can impact on your emotional health, causing anxiety and depression.
