International-Volunteer-Day

Every year on Tuesday 5th December is an opportunity to celebrate and thank those who give up not only their time, but energies into helping others. A time to celebrate such wonderful people, but equally a great opportunity to read and really see the positive impact and difference people are making within their communities.

Why-do-people-volunteer

Why do people volunteer ?

According to www.gov.uk in 2012/2022 approximately 16 million people living in England had taken part in either formal or informal volunteering at least once a month and 25 million had taken part at least once in the last 12 months.

Some people may volunteer as a steppingstone into a new change of career, but not sure on what they would like to do. Having the opportunity to try new things can help influence people and help identify what works for them.

Often people find them selves with more time on their hands, maybe a change in personal circumstances forces them into this position and creates an opening to help others.

Maybe loneliness is the driving force behind one of the main reasons for someone to offer their precious time.

There are many reasons for someone to start exploring volunteering options. The benefits people can expect from a volunteering journey may include:

Broaden your skills.

Sense of Purpose and accomplishment

Reduces stress, providing mental rewards.

Improve Self Confidence

Making new friends

Kate's story

In the past I have volunteered for a few different establishments; The first time I thought about volunteering was not long after I had my son, I was feeling like I needed to connect with other people and have adult conversations.  However, I had lost some of my confidence due to being hidden away for a while and trying to get lose my baby weight.

Volunteering didn't seem as scary as paid work and by volunteering I could ease my way back into a career. I started helping in a preschool, supporting children with mealtimes, and learning through play. I felt like I was making a difference to the children's lives. This made me feel good about myself and in turn boosted my confidence.

I then went onto work in a children's nursery, following on, a primary school where I volunteered whilst doing my training to become a teaching assistant.  Again, I felt happy that I was helping children to learn and make a good start in life.

After a while I decided I wanted to help adults, mental health had always been a passion of mine. Upon doing my research I found out more about Norfolk and Waveney Talking Therapies, I decided to get in touch to find out if I could volunteer.

I was offered to come along to the socials as a volunteer. I really enjoyed being part of a group where I felt safe and not judged by others regarding my mental health. I felt valued as people in the group would chat to me about their lives.

Eventually a job became available, and I applied., and here I am.

Volunteering for me has given me a steppingstone to finding my feet after losing my confidence, a way to discover myself again.

Ideas-on-places-to-volunteer

Ideas on places to volunteer

You may have come to the decision, or maybe you are starting to consider that now is a good time for YOU to start exploring what opportunities there are out there, and ways to help someone. A good starting point would be to look at an area that is of an interest to you.  A good starting question is, what is it that you like to do?

We have listed some opportunities to consider:

Food Bank

Animal Shelter

Local libraries

Be friending services.

Transport services

Local communities

Abroad programmes

There are many more ideas, but just remember if you choose to volunteer doing something you have no interest in, you may find yourself not looking forward to returning.

Involving-the-family

Involving the family

As adults we understand the importance, and the wonderful gift 'giving' truly is, but how about educating the importance of giving our time to others to our children. Not just by telling them but getting them involved too is a great way as a practical approach.

By doing so this teaches children about empathy and compassion, and how it feels good to help others.

If you would like to do something for your community, that doesn't involve a commitment how about starting with litter picking. You would be surprised how much litter is just tossed away. If you are passionate about where you live maybe starting in your own local area, maybe a park with the children or how about taking part in a Norfolk Beach Clean.  Or how about, helping a neighbour, and reaching out to them if they would like a nice meal or maybe walk their dog.

Involving the family and taking part in an activity together can also help bring you closer together, not forgetting it is a free day out too!
